Turning 26? You're About to Lose Your Parents' Insurance

4 million Americans age off their parents' plans each year. You have 60 days to enroll in your own coverage. Most people your age pay $0–$100/month with subsidies.

What Happens When You Turn 26

Under the ACA, you can stay on a parent's health insurance plan until you turn 26. On your 26th birthday (or the end of that month, depending on the plan), you are automatically removed. There is no grace period and no way to extend it.

This triggers a Special Enrollment Period — you have 60 days to enroll in your own health insurance plan through the ACA marketplace, regardless of when Open Enrollment is.

Don't go uninsured. Young adults have the highest rate of uninsurance of any age group. One ER visit costs $2,500 on average. An unexpected surgery can cost $30,000+. A marketplace plan costs as little as $0/month and caps your total risk at $10,600/year.

Your Options at 26

  • ACA marketplace plan: $0–$100/month for most young adults with subsidies. Best option if you don't have employer coverage.
  • Employer plan: If your employer offers health insurance, turning 26 is a qualifying event to enroll outside of your employer's normal enrollment window.
  • Private plan (off-marketplace): Same carriers, same ACA-compliant coverage purchased directly. $300–$800/month with no subsidies. Good option if you don't qualify for subsidies or prefer not to use the marketplace.
  • Catastrophic plan: Available to anyone under 30. Lowest premiums ($150–$300/month), highest deductible ($10,600). Covers 3 free primary care visits + free preventive care.
  • Short-term plan: $50–$200/month. Quick coverage while you figure out your long-term option. Limited benefits.

If you're healthy and rarely see a doctor: A Bronze or Catastrophic plan keeps your premiums under $50–$150/month while protecting you from financial catastrophe. Pair it with free preventive care (annual checkups, vaccines, screenings are $0 on all ACA plans).

The 60-Day Clock Is Real

If you miss the 60-day Special Enrollment window, you cannot enroll until the next Open Enrollment period (November–January). That could mean months without coverage. Start shopping before your birthday, not after.
